Solar Charge Controllers

A solar charge controller sits between the PV array and the battery bank, regulating the charging current to keep cells within their voltage window and stop them from being over-discharged. Two algorithms dominate the market. PWM controllers connect the panel directly to the battery in fast pulses — simple, cheap, and perfectly adequate when the panel voltage already matches the battery and the array is small.

MPPT controllers run an algorithm that finds the panel’s maximum-power-point and converts the harvested DC to battery voltage at up to 97.6% efficiency, recovering 20–30% more energy than PWM in cool weather or oversized arrays.
